Veronika Zapletalová
VILHELMINA
7. 10. 2026 - 3. 1. 2027

„Údolí světla, Místo, Někde, Ta vzpomínka, Ten pocit, Ta záře, Ten dotyk, To nekonečno, To všechno, Pramen hledání, Světlo, Počátek, Doma, Meziprostor, Bezčasí, Mezi nádechem a výdechem, Chvění, Modlitba za krajinu, Bezpečí, My jsme ta krajina...“, mapuje slovní terén při snaze vystihnout názvem esenci obsahu současné výstavy.

S rolí plátna projížděla a procházela krajinou.

An environment which is essentially familiar to us, where we can feel a deep sense of background, and a simple reminder of its existence makes us feel to be part of a safe source. For Veronika Zapletalová, this type of environment is represented by the specific Swedish landscape, and she has rendered her inner vision of its existence through line drawings and watercolours for multiple years. She is aware of its reality, regularly setting out for journeys to be able to search, see and experience it, to be close to it.

She travels through this territory perceiving it thoroughly, mapping the space, longing to find there the familiar. “The Valley of Light, A Place, Somewhere, The Memory, The Feeling, The Glare, The Touch, The Infinity, The Everything, The Beginning of Quest, Light, The Origin, At Home, The Interspace, Timelessness, Between Breathing In and Out, Shivering, Prayer for the Landscape, Safety, We Are the Landscape…” – she describes the verbal landscape while trying to capture the essence of the current exhibition. When she travels through Sweeden to the north, one of the towns she feels magically attracted to is Vilhelmina. Named in the early 19th century after the then Queen of Sweden, it symbolises the feminine element in the landscape. The distinctive deep red colouring of its houses is apparent in the artist's work.

This summer, Veronika Zapletalová undertook her fourth exploratory trip to these places. She created a six-metre-long panoramic drawing during the journey, driving and walking through the countryside with a roll of canvas. She took it with her to the mountains, asking the locals for the right place. She received answers which enabled her to continue her exploratory search. Guided by both her heart and her mind, she observed the contours of the hills and the course of the streams and rivers, becoming one with their nature. Her visual works are of a time-lapse nature. She models the scenes using short, thread-like strokes, placed side by side with the utmost care. “It is still only an endeavour to draw closer to something man is part of, something one is trying to understand and connect with, to return from a state of separation to the whole,” she states her conclusion. The overall visual impression is always both monumental and, at the same time, very delicate. It bears something sculptural in it. It is never about the final image, but about a record of the process. The essential for the artist in this environment is the specific nature of the light; it seems to her that the landscape is glowing.

Similarly, all of Veronika Zapletalová’s creative work can be seen as a vast landscape. She creates it through her installations in public spaces, murals, her own exhibitions and those she curates for other artists, publications, illustrations, lectures, and her sensitivity to the environment in general. This is how she creates the mental and emotional background for those who are perceptive to the environment they live in. Her prayer for the landscape continues to this day and is still having an effect.

VERONIKA ZAPLETALOVÁ (born 1971 in Prague) studied Art History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague between 1990–1992 and at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (Atelier of conceptual and intermedia art by Adéla Matasová, Atelier of all forms of sculpture by Kurt Gebauer) between 1991–1997. She completed study visits: at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten in Maastricht, Netherlands, in 1993; at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague between 1993–1994 (Atelier of landscape painting by František Hodonský); and at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris between 1994–1995. Between 1997–2001, she studied at the Institute of Creative Photography of the Silesian University in Opava. Selection of her solo exhibitions from the recent years: Mushrooms and a Small Lake (Houby a Jezírko), m3 Festival / Art in Space – City Therapy, Prague City Gallery, Bubec Studio, 2021; Memory of the Landscape (Paměť krajiny), Chateau Veleslavín, Vítězné Square, Prague 6, 2022–2026; Foresting (Lesnění), Vzlet Gallery, Prague, 2024; Old Mountains… Are Soft Like the Palm of Your Hand (Staré hory… jsou měkké jako dlaň), Havelka Gallery, Prague, 2026. She carried out multiple projects thematising the development of urban landscape, e.g. Chateau Veleslavín (2018–2023) or Veleslavín Laboratory (2023). She is a member of the Prague City Council for Art in Public Spaces.
